Open meetings and updates

If you are interested in finding out more about our community radio FM project, keep up to date by visiting this site or send us an email with a request for information. info(at)radiosunlight.org.uk

We have frequent open meetings where local people join radio volunteers to:

get to know each other, hear recent developments on the project, discuss ideas, listen to a radio specialist from another organisation.

At the last meeting BBC Journalist and media advisor Clive Lawrence was our guest speaker. He broadened our understanding of content style and emphasised the value of local journalism for our listeners.

We hope that we will soon become a station where most volunteers will develop greater ability to help provide local information and encourage debate.

Community radio stations are more likely to survive if listeners benefit from the service.  When we train more volunteers to work behind the scenes it will be easier to respond to messages, research and edit local information bulletins and news.

There is already a waiting list of potential volunteers who hope to train as presenters and producers, but there are lots of other ways you can get involved. Have a look at the join in page.

We intend to continue regular open meetings to share information and build stronger links with listeners. We have just set up a new facebook page which should help network with local people.

If you want to tell us what you want to hear, you could fill out our questionnaire on the following link to help us meet your expectations.

Latest update on the radio project

We are now broadcasting on 106.6FM and want to provide interesting and relevant content, so people will enjoy listening.

Sunlight Development Trust employed a radio project manager six months ago, who tirelessly struggled against all odds to put this community radio idea into motion. Along the way over the last two years volunteers have had their hopes dashed when various things went wrong or created barriers to progress. Many volunteers have stayed despite the set backs. They helped fuel the FM adventure with solutions to the many problems, determination and faith that Sunlight would do all it can to succeed. And we did.

We owe a great deal to a network of supporters from other organisations including volunteers at BRFM in Sheppey. Now we are on air, we hope to gradually build broader links with businesses and organisations interested in offering help or partnering to run community development or education projects.

We have launched a new volunteer policy and are training volunteers to build greater understanding of the high standards expected by listeners and Ofcom.

Have a look at the join in page if for details of how you can participate.

Background on the community radio proect?

Community radio is all about the community. We are developing ways for Medway people to have a voice and let people know what is happening in their neighbourhood.

We hope to gradually introduce practical ways for you to get involved if you are interested in connecting with this community radio project. You could listen to find a programme you enjoy. You might be able to become a team volunteer, you could provide information by contacting us or be a guest on a show. You may be able to make a recording about your community for us to edit.

Radio Sunlight has been evolving through ideas from local people. We have a great challenge ahead, but the potential benefit for local people makes it more than worth the effort. If you have any ideas, please get in touch.
